Jaffa’s Pregnancy |
Week One
0 – 7 Days |
Mating took place on 10th – 12th day into Jaffa’s season.

|
Week Two
7 – 14 Days |
During the second week of pregnancy, the cells which will develop into your puppies begin to grow and separate, and the tiny new embryos descend into the uterus for the remainder of the pregnancy.
Jaffa will still be fed and exercised normally during this time. You may notice behavioral changes in your bitch, she may become moody or more affectionate. |
Week Three
14 – 21 Days
|
During the third week of pregnancy, the embryos will begin to implant into the uterus, where they will receive the vital nutrients and life support which Jaffa body provides during her puppies time in the womb.
The fetuses are under a centimetre long at this stage. We Continue to feed and exercise Jaffa normally, but begin to monitor for increased appetite and provide for her developing needs accordingly. Do not make any sudden or unnecessary changes to the content of her diet Jaffa may begin to display mood changes as her breast tissue starts to develop. Morning sickness affects some bitches during the 3rd or 4th week, this will only last for a few days |
Week Four
21 – 28 Days |
The eyes and spine of the fetuses begin to develop, and the puppies are beginning to grow facial features.
The fetuses grow to around 1.5 centimetres long during week four. Fetuses can be felt in the uterine horns around day 28, and can also be seen by ultrasound. The spinal cords are developing, and the fetuses are beginning to grow facial features. Jaffa’s uterus will shortly fill with fluids to protect the fetuses. After this, it will be weeks until the puppies can be felt again. Jaffa’s appetite is likely to increase, so we will offer her more of her food. |
Week Five
28 – 35 Days |
The fetuses develop their sex organs and begin to look like actual puppies. The leg buds lengthen and develop toes.
Jaffa’s belly will begin to look noticeably swollen as the pups take up more space. With less room for full meals, it’s time to begin serving smaller meals more frequently. We have introduced Puppy mix into Jaffa’s Diet |
Week Six
35 – 42 Days |
The puppies continue to grow and will begin to develop their markings and the skin pigmentation that will eventually determine their colour and looks.
The eyes now have lids and remain sealed until approximately ten days after birth. We will Increase the food Jaffa is given to as much as she wants to eat. We are Increasing the ratio of puppy food in her diet. We are also feeding a multivitamin supplement at this time too. Jaffa is noticeably more uncomfortable at this point. She may vomit occasionally due to the extra pressure against her stomach. You may also notice clear fluid discharge from her vulva. This is normal. |
Week Seven
42 – 49 Days |
Puppies are well-developed, and now begin attaining size in preparation for birth.
You may be able to see/feel the puppies’ movements in Jaffa’s abdomen. Her breasts are well-developed and probably contain a bit of colostrum or “first milk”. At the end of this week take away the puppy food and put Jaffa back onto her normal diet little meals more often. Time to set up a whelping box. |
Week Eight
49 – 56 Days |
The pups have fur and are now crowded in the uterus. You may notice a lot of activity as they get into position for the coming birth.
Jaffa may begin digging the bedding in the whelping box. This is natural “nesting” behavior. We will allow her to feed freely as she is able. |
Week Nine
56 – 63 Days |
The pups are ready for birth, and may be quite still as they rest in preparation for the marathon to come.
Jaffa may appear uncomfortable and restless or anxious. Time to begin taking rectal temperature readings 12 hours apart. Normal temperature is 100 to 101 F; a drop down near 97 F held for two consecutive readings indicates labor will begin within 24 hours.
